What is the problem?

1.0 – 1.5 million illegal border crossings every year … that we know of!  No one really knows how many.  Estimates of how many actually occur vary between 3 – 15 million.

The sheer number is impossible for our Border Patrol and court system to deal with.  No one denies this.  This is why you hear of repeat offenders going through the immigration court system dozens of times and the Border Patrol looking the other way for “small” amounts of drugs.

The biggest threats are the violent criminals:  drug cartel operatives, human smugglers, gang members, and potential terrorists.  While these are the small minority of the whole picture, they are the most compelling reasons why we must maintain operational control of secure borders.

The vast majority of illegal entrants have traditionally been economic migrants who, aside from breaking immigration law, are not inherently criminal.  While more and more economic migrants are operating as “mules” for Mexican drug cartels, they do so for the simple reason that it is the quickest and safest way to gain access to the U.S.  Because we have allowed a system to develop where the cartels control the border to a much greater extent than our own government, it should be no surprise that the cartels set the rules for crossing.

“I have raised specific concerns about the current war at many debates over the past few months. My opponents have not countered back with any studied response, but rather rhetorical comments and out-dated talking points.  I believe the issue of war is too important for that – and so I hope the Afghanistan Learning Center will be a resource, not just to voters in this district, but also for my opponents to educate themselves.”

Last week, Congresswoman Giffords met with General Petraeus on Capitol Hill. This meeting took place after we lost over thirty American soldiers in Afghanistan this month. The burning question on Ms. Giffords’ mind, however, was: what are we doing to “green” our bases?

This is a disgrace. Ms. Giffords sits on the House Armed Services Committee and yet seems unaware of the ever-changing and deteriorating situation in our longest war ever – Afghanistan. Instead, she used that meeting for political grandstanding to please the Obama Administration.

“With their remarks or lack thereof about our ongoing war in Afghanistan, all of my opponents in this congressional race, including Gabrielle Giffords, have shown little respect for the gravity and seriousness of the office they are campaigning for. Foreign policy is not just a game – it is the lives of those who defend us and the security of our nation.  It’s time the voters of District 8 had a representative who understands foreign policy.”

We Arizonans, of all backgrounds, live with the problems of a porous border every day. Many of us have been the victims of violent crime, theft, and home invasions as a direct result of this border problem. We know that more than 90% of people who come to our great nation do so to make their lives better, but that does not excuse us for not addressing this serious problem.

We Americans have a right and responsibility to know and decide who enters our homeland, and I believe a robust immigration policy will aid in the future health and success of America. To do this, the federal government must fulfill its responsibility to secure our international borders and maintain operational control.

“That government is best which governs least.” –Thomas Jefferson

Anyone who has tried to start a business, attempted to get service from a federal bureaucracy, or been frustrated with out-of-touch representation knows Jefferson was right.

As federal government’s obesity problem grows, inevitably so does its intrusion into your wallet, family, and life. Washington politicians are convinced they know what is best for you, yet they over-tax, over-regulate and over-burden you.

To build a better business climate in America, we must first reduce our spending.  No department is immune from a justified spending cut.  It’s time to reign in the deficit and look critically at spending on entitlements to chip away at the debt.  Just as many of us follow a household budget, government must also live within its means.

Political intervention in our economy has corrupted and enriched both politicians and big business at the expense of small business, entrepreneurs, and the overall prosperity of every American.  Corporate bailouts are dangerous market toxins that reward inefficiency and bad behavior, destroy the ability of the market to correct poor decisions, and reduce productivity.

For today’s energy needs we must access the plentiful American supplies of oil, clean coal, and natural gas. Necessity and national security require us to tap our own resources.

Nuclear power is clean, safe, efficient, inexpensive, and leaves a small footprint. Influential special interests keep America from accessing the full benefits of domestic nuclear power, thereby leaving us overly dependent on foreign oil.

Americans know there are serious problems with our current method of collecting federal taxes, and that we need real tax reform. For instance, it costs $500 Billion a year just to comply with the tax code – that’s $400 every month for each taxpayer! The complexity is beyond comprehension, and the corruption is plentiful.

That our nation’s founders dedicated a Constitutional Amendment to the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, is evidence that they were concerned about government’s tendency to infringe on this fundamental right of a free person.

To give credence to the individual’s rights of life and liberty, one must acknowledge the individual’s right to defend life and liberty. This is why the 2nd Amendment exists.

I will not waver in my support and defense of the entire U.S. Constitution, including the Second Amendment.

I want every American to have access to affordable, high quality healthcare. Our current system needs major reform to make that happen.

Should the federal government control our healthcare, decision-making will be in the hands of bureaucrats whose concern will not be your health, but the government’s bottom line. Rationing, waiting lines, complexity, and lack of medical innovation will be the new hallmarks of American healthcare.

Political control will not fix, but will surely aggravate the problems.

Every year, we expect our military personnel to do more with less. We must stop destroying military families with multiple year-long deployments because we refuse to effectively manage our force. We need to stop chasing our noblest citizens from military service.

I support strengthening our forces and ensuring that those in uniform have the best available resources to defend our nation – nothing more, nothing less. We must only fight properly declared wars of self-defense and not engage in nation-building and international social engineering.
